Network & Wi-Fi Support

We set up, secure and look after business networks and office Wi-Fi in Cardiff and across South Wales: the firewall, the Wi-Fi, the switches and the internet connection, monitored by a local team.

Network support

The network your business runs on

Network support means keeping everything between your staff and the internet working, fast and secure: the firewall, the Wi-Fi, the switches and cabling, and the broadband or leased line itself. We look after all of it for businesses in Cardiff and South Wales, and we monitor it, so many problems are spotted before anyone in the office notices.

When the network isn’t right, everything feels slow. Teams calls break up, files take an age to open, the card machine can’t connect and the meeting room Wi-Fi gives up as soon as a client sits down. Most of those problems come from a handful of causes, and most can be fixed without replacing everything.

For businesses whose IT we manage, looking after the network is part of the monthly service: support, monitoring, updates and routine changes. New equipment, cabling and installation work are quoted separately, so you know the cost before anything is ordered.

Firewalls managed

Updated, documented and locked down, not installed once and forgotten.

Wi-Fi that reaches

Business access points where people actually work, with guests kept separate.

Backup connections

A second line or mobile data router that takes over when the main line fails.

Monitored by us

Alerts come to our team, alongside your computers and backups.

Firewalls

A firewall that’s actually managed

Every business internet connection should sit behind a properly configured firewall. It decides what’s allowed in and out, and on most business models it also filters web traffic, blocks known threats and handles remote access for staff.

The trouble is that firewalls are often installed once and forgotten. Default passwords stay in place, firmware goes years without an update, subscriptions lapse and old rules for long-gone suppliers stay open.

We manage firewalls properly: firmware kept current, security services renewed, rules reviewed and documented, and the admin page kept off the internet or protected with multi-factor authentication. That’s also what Cyber Essentials expects. SonicWall is one of our technology partners, and if you already have a firewall we check it first. It may only need updating and tidying, not replacing.

Office Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi that reaches every desk

Poor Wi-Fi is one of the most common complaints in any office, and it rarely comes down to the broadband. More often it’s a single router trying to cover a whole floor, access points in the wrong places, or neighbouring networks crowding the same channels.

We start by looking at where people actually work and where the signal drops, then put business access points where they’re needed, managed together so laptops and phones move between them without dropping calls.

Guest Wi-Fi gets its own network, kept apart from your staff network, so visitors and personal phones get internet access with no route to your files, printers or card machines. Staff Wi-Fi uses a strong password that changes when people leave, not one that’s been stuck on the wall since the office opened.

Switches and cabling

The parts nobody looks at

Behind the Wi-Fi sit the switches and cabling that connect desks, printers, phones and access points. A tangle of unlabelled cables, a home switch under a desk or a damaged cable run can cause faults that look like something else entirely.

We keep a record of what’s connected where, replace failing or underpowered switches, and separate different kinds of traffic where it helps, for example keeping phones, guest devices and building systems apart from your main network. When new cabling is needed, for a refit or an office move, we plan it with you and coordinate the installation.

Moving to an internet phone system? We check the network first, because calls suffer before anything else. See business phone systems.

Internet connections

Broadband, leased lines and a backup

Most small offices run well on business broadband, ideally full fibre where it’s available. Larger teams, or businesses that rely on cloud systems and video calls all day, may be better on a leased line: a dedicated connection with the same speed up and down and a faster repair commitment from the provider. Leased lines can take a while to install, so order early if you’re planning a move.

Whatever the main connection, we usually recommend a backup. That might be a second line from a different provider or a 4G or 5G router, set up so the firewall switches over automatically if the main line fails. It won’t be as fast, but email, Teams and card payments keep working while the fault is fixed.

We help you work out what you need, and when there’s a fault, we deal with the provider so you don’t have to.

Remote access

Working from home, safely

With email and files in Microsoft 365, many businesses need less remote access to the office than they think. That’s good news, because every route into the office network is something to secure.

Where you do need it, for an office server, a line-of-business application or a shared drive that hasn’t moved to the cloud, we set up a VPN on the firewall with multi-factor authentication, give access only to the people who need it, and remove it when they leave.

We don’t open remote desktop straight to the internet. The NCSC warns that ransomware attackers often get in through exposed remote desktop services and unpatched remote access devices, so we avoid the first and keep the second updated. More on how we protect accounts is on our Microsoft 365 security page.

Monitoring

Watched, not just installed

For businesses whose IT we manage, we monitor the network alongside your computers and backups. If the internet connection drops, the backup line takes over, a firewall goes offline or a security subscription is about to expire, our team is alerted and can act, often before anyone in the office has noticed.

Monitoring also gives us a history. When someone says the internet has been slow all week, we can see whether it really has, when it started and what changed, rather than guessing.

Firmware updates for firewalls, switches and access points are planned, with any restarts scheduled for a quiet time.

Sound familiar?

Signs your network needs attention

  • Wi-Fi drops in certain rooms, or whenever there’s a video call
  • Nobody is sure who has the firewall password, or when it was last updated
  • When the internet goes down, the whole office stops
  • There’s a box under a desk that everyone is afraid to touch
  • Home workers connect to the office in a way nobody quite remembers setting up

How we start

From first look to steady running

  1. Look. We review your firewall, Wi-Fi, switches and connections, and talk to the people who use them.
  2. Plan. You get a plain-English summary of what’s fine, what’s risky and what we’d change, with costs for any new equipment.
  3. Fix. We make the changes at a time that suits you, starting with anything that’s a security risk.
  4. Look after. The network is monitored, updated and supported as part of your managed IT service.

Questions

Network and Wi-Fi support: FAQs

Do you install office Wi-Fi in Cardiff?

Yes. We plan, install and look after business Wi-Fi for offices in Cardiff and across South Wales, including separate guest networks. We start by looking at how the space is used and where the signal is weak, then recommend access points and positions, with a quote before anything is ordered.

Is network support included in your managed IT fee?

For businesses whose IT we manage, day-to-day support, monitoring and routine changes to the network are part of the monthly fee, which starts from £40 per user per month + VAT. New equipment such as firewalls, access points and switches, security subscriptions, cabling and larger projects are quoted separately. See our pricing.

Should we get a leased line or business broadband?

It depends on your headcount and how much you rely on cloud systems and video calls. Full fibre broadband suits many small offices. A leased line costs more and takes longer to install, but gives you a dedicated connection and a faster repair commitment. We’ll look at how you work and give you a straight recommendation.

Can you take over our existing firewall?

Often, yes. We check its model, age, firmware and subscriptions first. If it still receives security updates, it may only need updating and tidying. If it’s out of support, we’ll recommend replacing it, because a firewall that no longer gets security updates is a risk and wouldn’t meet Cyber Essentials.

Can you help when we move office?

Yes, and a move is the easiest time to get the network right. Order the new internet connection early, because business lines can take weeks to install, and let us plan the Wi-Fi, cabling and phones before you move in. See how we handle office moves.
