IT Support in Caerphilly

Managed IT support for businesses across Caerphilly county borough from £40 per user per month + VAT, with onsite visits included and a team about 20 minutes away who knows your staff by name.

Caerphilly

IT support that turns up

Alphabyte IT looks after the IT for businesses in Caerphilly and across the county borough, for a fixed monthly fee that starts at £40 per user + VAT. Caerphilly is just over the mountain from our office in east Cardiff, about 9 miles and roughly 20 minutes away, and we support businesses from offices in the town centre to workshops and units on the industrial estates.

Not every IT problem can be fixed down a phone line. Networks, servers, printers and the PC on the workshop floor sometimes need someone in the room, so onsite visits are included in our monthly fee, not charged by the hour.

Most problems are still fixed remotely, and anything that stops work is typically picked up straight away, with response times backed by our SLA.

What you get

One fixed fee, everything covered

  • Unlimited support by phone, remotely and onsite, from £40 per user per month
  • Urgent problems picked up straight away, backed by our SLA
  • Proactive monitoring, so most issues are fixed before you notice them
  • Daily backups and a disaster recovery plan, checked by our team
  • Anti-virus and anti-spam on every device, and multi-factor authentication enforced
  • Help with office phone systems and copiers
  • Systems kept to the Cyber Essentials standard

Licences for Microsoft 365, new equipment and one-off projects like an office move aren’t in the monthly fee. We quote for those separately, so there are no surprises.

Around the borough

From the Caerphilly basin to the top of the valley

The county borough runs from Caerphilly and Bedwas up through Ystrad Mynach, Blackwood and Oakdale to Rhymney, and its business premises are just as varied.

Business centres and small offices

The council lets office suites at Tredomen Business & Technology Centre and the Tredomen Innovation & Technology Centre in Ystrad Mynach. Its Employment Land Review found that ICT jobs in the county borough doubled between 2015 and 2019, with several growing tech firms based at Caerphilly Business Park.

Small offices like these usually run almost entirely on Microsoft 365, laptops and a good internet connection, so that’s where we focus: accounts protected by multi-factor authentication, laptops kept updated wherever they are, and email filtered for phishing before it reaches anyone.

Industrial estates and units

Council planning policy protects the main estates around the town, including Caerphilly Business Park, Western, Trecenydd, Pontygwindy, Bedwas House and Pantglas, for employment use. Further up the borough, the council lets units at Oakdale Business Park, Woodfieldside Business Park, New Tredegar Business Park and The Lawn Industrial Estate in Rhymney.

Units come with their own IT headaches. Racking blocks Wi-Fi, a dusty workshop is hard on PCs, and when the only internet line goes down, so do orders, email and the card machine. We plan coverage around the racking, choose equipment that copes with the conditions, and add a second connection that takes over on its own. More on networks and Wi-Fi.

Manufacturing

Where one job in five is in manufacturing

Manufacturing is the largest sector in the county borough. The council’s Employment Land Review found it accounted for 12,000 jobs in 2019, 20.7% of all employment and almost twice its share across Wales, with new high-value manufacturers attracted to places such as Oakdale.

The council has also run a Business Productivity Enhancement Programme for manufacturers with more than ten staff, starting with a free productivity diagnostic. At the time of writing, new applications are on hold because of funding restrictions, so it’s worth asking the council when it reopens.

Productivity is where good IT earns its keep. A production team that can see orders, drawings and stock levels without chasing someone in the office wastes less time, and a network that doesn’t drop out mid-shift keeps the line moving. We look after engineering firms and manufacturers with exactly that in mind.

On the shop floor

IT that fits around production

  • Updates and restarts scheduled between shifts, never in the middle of a run
  • PCs that control machines and can’t be upgraded kept on a separate part of the network, cut off from the internet
  • Shared mailboxes and Teams channels for orders, so a customer email doesn’t sit in one person’s inbox
  • Shop-floor PCs and tablets given the same security as the office: updates, anti-virus and multi-factor authentication
  • Microsoft Copilot licensed and switched on safely when you want it, with our sister business AlphaOps for automating the paperwork itself

That separate network matters for Cyber Essentials. The current requirements say software that’s no longer supported must be removed, or kept in a separate part of the network with no traffic to or from the internet, so we deal with older machine PCs early rather than at assessment time.

Servers and backups

Keeping your data safe

Plenty of Caerphilly businesses still run a server in the office, and for some that’s the right choice. We’ll tell you honestly whether moving to the cloud makes sense for you or whether you’re better off keeping things in-house. Either way, we look after it.

Production, stock and accounts software often has to stay on a local server, and that’s fine. We keep it patched, make sure any remote access to it uses multi-factor authentication rather than being left open to the internet, and check its health through our monitoring.

Whatever you run, your data is backed up every day and our team checks the backups. If the worst happens, there’s a recovery plan ready to go.

Local support

Talk to the council’s business team

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Business Enterprise Renewal Team gives new and existing businesses advice on support, premises and funding. You can reach them at business@caerphilly.gov.uk or on 01443 866220.

Council grants have paid for IT before: in 2023–24, a local firm put its council grants towards IT equipment, printers, security equipment, a new website and a new member of staff. Schemes open and close, so check what’s available before you buy. If equipment is part of an application, we’ll give you a fixed, itemised quote, and we’ll tell you honestly if what you’re planning is more than you need.

If your premises can’t get 30Mbps broadband from any provider, the Welsh Government’s Access Broadband Cymru scheme offers businesses up to £800 per premises towards a new connection.

Switching or sharing

A new provider, or a second pair of hands

If your current IT provider isn’t working out, switching usually takes one email from you. We assess your systems for free, agree a plan and handle the handover with your current supplier, so your team carries on working. See how switching works.

Some businesses have someone in-house who looks after IT, often alongside another job. You don’t have to replace them. With co-managed IT, they stay in charge and we sit behind them with helpdesk overflow, monitoring and security tools, holiday cover and help with projects.

And there’s a no-obligation review period in our agreement, so you can judge us on the work before committing.

Questions

IT support in Caerphilly: FAQs

Which areas around Caerphilly do you cover?

The whole county borough, including Caerphilly town, Bedwas, Ystrad Mynach, Blackwood, Oakdale, Risca, Newbridge and Rhymney, as well as Cardiff, Newport and the rest of South Wales. An engineer visit costs nothing extra, from Bedwas to Rhymney.

Can you support a server in our office?

Yes. We look after on-premises servers as well as Microsoft 365 and cloud services, including daily backups that our team checks, security updates and monitoring.

We have an old PC that runs a machine and can’t be upgraded. Will it stop us getting Cyber Essentials?

Not necessarily. Under the current requirements, software that’s no longer supported has to be removed, or the device kept in a separate part of the network that has no traffic to or from the internet. We can set that up and document it, so the rest of your business can be certified.

Our unit can’t get decent broadband. Is there any help?

Possibly. If no provider can give your premises 30Mbps, the Welsh Government’s Access Broadband Cymru scheme offers up to £800 per premises towards a new connection, and businesses can apply. We can help you compare options, such as a fixed wireless or mobile data connection, and set up a backup line so one fault doesn’t stop work.
