IT Support in Bristol

Managed IT support for Bristol businesses from our Cardiff team, about 41 miles away: most problems fixed remotely, onsite visits when they’re needed, and one fixed monthly fee from £40 per user + VAT.

Bristol

A Cardiff IT team, supporting Bristol remotely

Alphabyte IT provides managed IT support for Bristol businesses from our office in east Cardiff, about 41 miles away and a little under an hour along the M4. Almost all support happens by phone and remote access, which is how most IT problems get fixed anyway, and when a job needs hands on, an engineer drives over.

We’re honest about what that means. We don’t have a Bristol office, and we’re not ten minutes down the road. What you get instead is a small, experienced team that knows your systems and your staff by name, with no call centre or automated menus, for one fixed monthly fee per user from £40 + VAT.

Distance doesn’t slow down the first response. When a problem stops your business working, we typically pick it up straight away, and our response times are backed by an SLA.

Remote first

Phone and remote support for everyday problems, from people who know your set-up.

Onsite when needed

An engineer comes to your Bristol office when a job needs hands on.

From £40 per user

A fixed monthly fee for unlimited support, monitoring, backups and security.

Cyber Essentials standard

Every system we manage is kept to the standard, certified or not.

Getting there

Over the bridge, without the toll

For onsite work we come over the Prince of Wales Bridge, which carries the M4 across the Severn. Tolls on both Severn crossings were abolished on 17 December 2018, so a visit is simply a drive.

The north of the city is the nearest part for us. Aztec West, for example, sits by junction 16 of the M5, about a mile from the M4 and M5 interchange at Almondsbury. The city centre and Temple Quarter take a little longer, depending on traffic.

Because a visit takes more planning than popping round the corner, we book onsite work ahead wherever we can and group jobs together, so one visit does several things rather than one.

Day to day

Fixed remotely, or worth a visit

Done remotely

  • Microsoft 365 accounts, email, Teams and file sharing
  • Laptop and PC problems, software installs and updates
  • Accounts for new starters, and access closed off for leavers
  • Security alerts, backup checks and monitoring, which don’t need anyone on site

Worth a visit

  • New firewalls, Wi-Fi access points and cabling
  • Hardware that has physically failed and needs swapping
  • Office moves and setting up a new office
  • Printers, scanners and meeting-room screens that won’t cooperate

Both sides of the Severn

One provider for Cardiff and Bristol offices

If your business has an office in Cardiff and another in Bristol, or staff who travel between the two, one IT provider for both makes life simpler. Our office is on the eastern edge of Cardiff, so we’re already part of the way to you.

  • One Microsoft 365 set-up, so files, calendars and Teams work the same in both offices
  • The same security everywhere: multi-factor authentication, anti-virus and anti-spam on every device, and systems kept to the Cyber Essentials standard
  • Staff who move between offices sign in once, and their laptop works in either
  • One support number, one team and one monthly invoice

Moving office

Taking space in Temple Quarter?

Bristol City Council says the Temple Quarter regeneration will transform more than 130 hectares of brownfield land around Temple Meads over the next 25 years, working with the West of England Combined Authority, Network Rail and Homes England. New and refurbished buildings mean businesses moving, and a move is the best time to get the IT right, as long as it’s planned early.

Order the internet connection as soon as the lease is agreed, because business lines can take weeks to install. Plan the Wi-Fi and cabling with the fit-out, not after it, and move your phone numbers so callers never notice. We plan and run moves like this, wherever you’re moving to, and quote for them separately from the monthly fee. See IT projects and office moves.

Free help

Free security support in the West of England

Bristol businesses can get free help from the Cyber Resilience Centre for the South West, which is police-led and offers government-funded cyber security services to small and medium-sized organisations and charities in Bristol and across the region. The West of England Growth Hub, run by the combined authority, offers free, impartial business support, with technology and innovation among its themes.

Both are worth using. Where we fit is doing the work: putting the security controls in place, keeping them there month after month, and getting you through Cyber Essentials, which works the same way in England as it does in Wales. Our Cyber Essentials support starts from £295 + VAT, plus the IASME assessment fee, and we also prepare businesses for Cyber Essentials Plus and support them through the hands-on audit.

Want an outside view first? AlphaSec, our security brand, will run a free security snapshot: one page, built from public records only, covering how well your email domain is protected against spoofing, your website’s certificate and software, and when your domain is due for renewal.

Honest limits

When a Bristol firm may suit you better

If your business needs an engineer on site every week, runs a lot of equipment that fails physically, or can’t wait for the drive when something does need hands on, an IT provider based in Bristol may be the better choice, and we’ll tell you so.

We suit Bristol businesses that mostly work in Microsoft 365 and on laptops, want a small team that knows them, and care more about security done properly than about someone being round the corner.

If you already have an IT person in-house, they can be the hands on site while we sit behind them with monitoring and security tools, helpdesk overflow and holiday cover. See co-managed IT.

Switching to us

Changing provider, mostly from a distance

Leaving your current provider usually means one email from you. After that, we do the work: a free assessment of your systems, a handover plan, and the hand-off with your old supplier, mostly done remotely. Where the handover needs someone on site, for example to replace a firewall, we plan that visit with you. See how switching works.

Pricing works the same way as everywhere we support: from £40 per user per month + VAT for unlimited support, monitoring, daily backups and security, with Microsoft 365 licences, new hardware and projects extra. Your fixed quote sets out exactly what’s included, onsite visits too, before you commit, and our agreement has a no-obligation review period.

Questions

IT support in Bristol: FAQs

Where are you based, and how long does it take you to reach Bristol?

We’re in east Cardiff, about 41 miles from Bristol, and the drive over the Prince of Wales Bridge usually takes a little under an hour, depending on traffic and where in Bristol you are. Most problems are fixed remotely without anyone travelling, so the drive only matters for jobs that need hands on, and we plan those ahead where we can.

Can you look after offices in both Cardiff and Bristol?

Yes. We can run both offices on one Microsoft 365 set-up, with the same security, the same support team and one fixed monthly fee per user, so staff can work in either office without anything changing.

Is Cyber Essentials any different for a business in England?

No. Cyber Essentials is a UK-wide, government-backed scheme, and the requirements are the same in Bristol as they are in Cardiff. We check your systems, fix anything that would fail and help you complete the assessment. Every business we’ve prepared has passed.

Is there free cyber security help for Bristol businesses?

Yes. The police-led Cyber Resilience Centre for the South West offers government-funded cyber security services to small and medium-sized organisations and charities in Bristol, and AlphaSec’s free security snapshot gives you a one-page report on your email, website and domain security, from public records only.
