IT Support in Barry

Managed IT support for Barry businesses, from start-ups at the Waterfront to the firms that supply the port, local industry and the airport zone.

Barry

IT support for Barry, from the Waterfront to the docks

Yes, we provide managed IT support for businesses in Barry. Barry is one of the towns we already work in: it’s about 10 miles from our office in east Cardiff, roughly 25 minutes by road on a normal day. Most problems are fixed remotely, and when something needs hands on, an engineer comes to you, with onsite visits included in the monthly fee.

Barry’s businesses are a wide mix. There are start-ups in the council’s units at the Innovation Quarter, a working port, a chemical plant that never stops, and an aerospace and defence zone a few miles west at the airport. That mix shapes the advice we give here, which is why this page talks about supplier checks and grants as much as laptops.

For one fixed fee per user you get unlimited support by phone, remotely and onsite, plus the monitoring, backups and security that stop most problems happening at all. You deal with the same small team every time.

Industry and the airport zone

Supplying bigger customers

Barry has heavy industry on its doorstep. Dow’s silicones site in the town runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with around 850 employees and contractors. Associated British Ports describes the Port of Barry as a hub for the region’s chemical industry, handling around 300,000 tonnes of cargo a year. A few miles west, Business Wales promotes the Cardiff Airport and Bro Tathan Enterprise Zone as a leading UK aerospace and defence location.

If your business supplies any of them, directly or further down the chain, your IT will sooner or later be judged through a supplier questionnaire. In defence the rule is already written down. The Ministry of Defence’s cyber security standard for suppliers, Def Stan 05-138, applies to MOD suppliers and their subcontractors, and it requires Cyber Essentials certification at every risk level, with Cyber Essentials Plus at the higher levels.

We prepare businesses for Cyber Essentials, and every one we’ve prepared has passed. If a contract calls for Plus, which adds a hands-on audit by an independent assessor, we’ll tell you before you start, so there are no surprises at tender stage.

Workshops and yards

IT that works away from a desk

A lot of Barry’s work happens in units, warehouses and yards rather than offices. That brings problems an office never has: Wi-Fi that needs to reach a loading bay, a PC on the workshop floor that everyone shares, and one broadband line the whole operation depends on.

We look at the whole site, not just the office. That usually means proper network and Wi-Fi coverage where people actually work, separate logins on shared machines so you know who did what, and a second internet connection if a line fault would stop you trading. Your data is backed up every day and checked by our team, with a disaster recovery plan ready if a machine fails or ransomware gets in.

Engineering firms and manufacturers have needs of their own, from CAD workstations to drawings that must never go missing. Our page on IT support for engineering firms covers those in more detail.

Start-ups and growing firms

Starting out at the Innovation Quarter

The Vale of Glamorgan Council lets business units at the Innovation Quarter on Barry Waterfront to start-ups and growing firms. The Engine Room reopened in May 2025 after a refurbishment paid for with more than £1 million from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and now has 11 offices. The Business Service Centre nearby has 8 workshops and 15 offices.

A small office is the cheapest place to set IT up properly. We’d start with Microsoft 365 business accounts rather than personal ones, multi-factor authentication on every login, laptops owned by the business rather than by staff, and backups from the first day. Get that right while there are three of you and it grows with you, instead of needing untangling when there are fifteen.

When you outgrow the unit, we’ll plan the move so the broadband, phones and network are ready the day you arrive. Moves are quoted separately from the monthly fee.

Funding

A grant for new kit? Read the rules first

The council’s Economic Development team runs the Vale Business Development Grant, funded through the Local Growth Fund. Its current guidance offers £8,000 to £50,000, covering up to 50% of costs, for established businesses with clear growth plans, and digital technology is listed as an eligible cost. Advanced materials and manufacturing is one of its priority sectors, which suits a town like Barry.

Three rules catch people out:

  • Nothing bought before the written grant offer is funded, so don’t order the laptops early.
  • Projects between £2,500 and £24,999 need three quotes, and larger ones need more.
  • The grant is paid after you’ve spent the money and shown the evidence, so plan the cash in between.

We’re happy to provide one of your quotes, kept to what the project actually needs. The council decides what qualifies, so check with its team before you build a plan around the money.

What you get

One monthly fee, the day-to-day covered

  • Unlimited support by phone, remotely and onsite, from £40 per user per month + VAT
  • Urgent problems typically picked up straight away, backed by our SLA
  • Proactive monitoring, so most issues are found before they stop you working
  • Daily backups and a disaster recovery plan, monitored by our team
  • Anti-virus and anti-spam on every device, with multi-factor authentication enforced
  • Help with office phone systems and copiers, alongside your telecoms provider

Not in the fee: Microsoft 365 licences (we can supply them), new hardware and software, and projects. If spreading the cost of new equipment would help, Evergreen IT lets you lease hardware instead of buying it outright. See full pricing.

Switching provider

Changing IT company in Barry

If you already have an IT provider and it isn’t working out, moving is easier than most people expect. You tell your current provider you’re leaving, usually with one email, and we do the rest: a free assessment of your systems, a plan, and a handover that doesn’t leave your team without support in between.

Our agreement includes a no-obligation review period, so you can see how we work before you commit. See how switching works.

Being straight with you

When you don’t need us

If you’re a sole trader with one laptop and Microsoft 365 already set up well, a monthly support contract is probably more than you need. Switch on multi-factor authentication, keep your devices updated and make sure your files are backed up somewhere other than the laptop itself.

Once you employ people, hold customer data or face a supplier check, it’s worth a conversation. We’ll tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit.

Questions

IT support in Barry: FAQs

Do you already work in Barry?

Yes. Barry is one of the towns we cover, along with Cardiff and the rest of South Wales. It’s about 10 miles from our office in east Cardiff, so onsite visits are routine, and they’re included in the monthly fee.

We supply a defence or aerospace company. Do we need Cyber Essentials?

If you work on MOD contracts, directly or as a subcontractor, almost certainly. The MOD’s supplier standard, Def Stan 05-138, requires Cyber Essentials at every risk level and Cyber Essentials Plus at the higher ones. We can prepare you for Cyber Essentials from £295 + VAT, plus the IASME assessment fee.

Can a council grant pay for new computers?

It can. The Vale Business Development Grant lists digital technology as an eligible cost for established businesses with growth plans, at up to 50%. Nothing bought before the written offer counts, and projects of £2,500 or more need at least three quotes. We can provide one of them.

Our site runs shifts around the clock. Can you support that?

We’re not a round-the-clock service, so we plan for it instead: a backup internet connection, spare equipment on site, monitoring that flags problems early, and clear steps your shift supervisor can follow. Within our support hours, urgent problems are typically picked up straight away, backed by our SLA.
