Newport

Local IT support for Newport businesses

Alphabyte IT provides managed IT support for businesses across Newport, from offices in the city centre to the business parks and industrial estates along the M4. Our office is on Rhymney River Bridge Road in east Cardiff, on the Newport side of the city, about 12 miles and roughly 20 minutes from Newport. Most problems are fixed remotely, and when something needs hands on, we come to you.

You pay one fixed monthly fee per user, from £40 + VAT. That covers unlimited support, proactive monitoring, daily backups that our team checks, protection against viruses and spam on every device, and multi-factor authentication enforced for you. Microsoft 365 licences, new hardware and projects such as office moves are quoted separately.

You deal with the same small team every time. We’re on first-name terms with the people we support, and there’s no call centre or automated menu to get through.

Around the city

Celtic Springs, Langstone and everywhere between

Newport has business parks, science parks, industrial estates and serviced offices, and they don’t all need the same IT. Here’s how the mix shapes the work we do.

Business parks on both sides of the city

Celtic Springs, at junction 28 between Newport and Cardiff, and Cleppa Park beside it are a short drive from our office, so onsite visits there are quick to arrange. At the other end of the city, Merlin House at Langstone Business Park, just off junction 24, offers serviced offices, as does Devon Place in the city centre, close to the station.

A serviced office usually comes with internet and Wi-Fi supplied by the building. It’s convenient, but your laptops share a network you don’t control, so we set devices up to look after themselves wherever they connect: kept updated, protected by anti-virus, and signed in with multi-factor authentication.

Estates, units and the old steelworks

The city also has industrial estates such as Queensway Meadows, Leeway, Maesglas and Wern, and the Celtic Business Park on the former Llanwern steelworks site. Units like these bring different IT jobs: Wi-Fi that has to reach the warehouse as well as the office, a label printer or scanner that holds up dispatch when it stops, and a single internet line that takes orders, email and card payments down with it when it fails.

We usually recommend a backup connection that the firewall switches to automatically, and business Wi-Fi access points placed where people actually work rather than one router doing its best from a corner. How we look after networks and Wi-Fi.

High-tech Newport

Protecting designs, data and know-how

Newport is home to CSconnected, which describes itself as the world’s first compound semiconductor cluster, with the CSA Catapult Innovation Centre at Imperial Park and a foundry owned by the ten Cardiff Capital Region councils. Imperial House and Courtyard, built as a research and development science park, are still a hub for R&D businesses, and the UK’s Intellectual Property Office is in the city too, at Concept House on Cardiff Road.

If your business designs, tests or makes things, or supplies firms that do, your drawings, test results and customer specifications are often worth far more than the computers they sit on. The threats are mostly ordinary: a stolen password, a file shared with anyone who has the link, or a former employee who can still open the project folder.

That’s why we treat access as seriously as backups. It’s the same work we do for engineering firms across South Wales.

What we put in place

Six habits that keep your IP yours

  • Multi-factor authentication on every account, with admin accounts kept separate from everyday ones
  • Project folders opened up by role, rather than one shared drive everyone can see
  • Sharing outside the business in Microsoft 365 limited to what you need, and reviewed
  • Laptops encrypted, so a lost bag doesn’t mean lost designs
  • Leavers’ access removed on their last day, and checked
  • Daily backups, checked by our team, so ransomware isn’t the end of the story

Cyber Essentials

The basic certificate, or Plus?

The Office for National Statistics is based at Government Buildings on Cardiff Road, along the road from the Intellectual Property Office. If you supply public bodies like these, or larger companies, expect questions about your security. The UK government says Cyber Essentials lets a business bid for government contracts that involve handling personal or financial data.

Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment, marked by a certification body. Cyber Essentials Plus adds a hands-on technical audit of your systems. Before you start, ask your customer which one the contract needs: most small businesses begin with the basic certificate, and Plus is worth doing when a contract demands it.

We prepare businesses for both. Our Cyber Essentials service starts from £295 + VAT, with the IASME assessment fee charged separately, and every business we’ve prepared has passed. For Plus, we get your systems ready, fix what would fail and support you through the certification body’s audit.

Business continuity

When the office can’t open

Newport City Council’s civil contingencies team gives free advice on business continuity planning, covering risks such as fire, theft, floods and losing key staff. The council can’t write your plan for you, but it can point you to guidance and a self-assessment template.

For most businesses, IT is the biggest chapter in that plan. For the businesses whose IT we manage, data is backed up every day, our team checks the backups, and there’s a disaster recovery plan for getting people working again, whether that means restoring a server or getting staff working from home on Microsoft 365. See backup and disaster recovery.

For free security guidance alongside that, the police-led Cyber Resilience Centre for Wales supports small businesses and charities across Gwent, which includes Newport.

Switching provider

Unhappy with your current IT support?

Most Newport businesses that come to us already have an IT provider. Slow answers, a different engineer every time or a contract that never seems to cover anything are the usual reasons they move.

Switching is simpler than people expect. You tell your current provider you’re leaving, usually with one email, and we handle the rest: a free assessment of your systems, a plan, and a handover that doesn’t disrupt your team. See how switching works.

Have your own IT person you want to keep? We can work alongside them instead, taking the overflow, adding our monitoring and security tools, and stepping in for holidays. See co-managed IT.

Who we work with

Professional firms and growing teams

Most of our clients are professional firms, such as solicitors, accountants and architects, along with engineering firms, consultancies and growing businesses that need their IT to just work. Our agreement includes a no-obligation review period, so you can see how we work before you commit.

“As a professional Architects firm, having a reliable IT partner is crucial to our operations and we’ve trusted Alphabyte IT with this role for over seven years now.”

Questions

IT support in Newport: FAQs

Do you cover all of Newport?

Yes. We support businesses across Newport, including the city centre, Caerleon, Rogerstone and Langstone, the business parks at Celtic Springs and Cleppa Park, and the industrial estates, as well as Cardiff and the rest of South Wales.

Do you charge extra to come out to Newport?

No. Onsite visits are included in the monthly fee, wherever you are in Newport. Managed IT support starts from £40 per user per month + VAT, and we give you a fixed quote before you commit. See what’s included.

Do we need Cyber Essentials Plus, or will the basic certificate do?

Check what your customer or contract asks for. Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment marked by a certification body, and Plus adds a hands-on technical audit of your systems. Most small businesses start with the basic certificate. We can prepare you for either, and we’ll fix anything that would fail before the assessment.

Is there council funding in Newport for new computers?

At the time of writing, the City of Newport Business Grants are paused. When the scheme is open, it can fund up to five equipment items, including ICT equipment and software, at 50% of net costs, up to £2,500 or £5,000 inside the city centre, and the investment must create at least one job. Leased equipment isn’t covered, and you mustn’t commit to spending before you have a written offer, so talk to the council before you order. We can give you a fixed, itemised quote for your application.
