IT Support in Merthyr Tydfil

Managed IT support for Merthyr Tydfil businesses, with a team who knows your staff by name and one fixed monthly fee.

Merthyr Tydfil

IT support at the top of the A470

If you’re looking for IT support in Merthyr Tydfil, Alphabyte IT covers the whole county borough from our office in east Cardiff, and Merthyr is one of the areas we already work in. It’s about 25 miles down the valley to us, or roughly 40 minutes when the roads are clear. A fixed monthly fee, from £40 per user + VAT, buys unlimited support by phone, remotely and onsite, and anything urgent is typically picked up straight away, as set out in our SLA.

Most of what we do never needs the journey. Accounts, email, software, updates, backups and security are all looked after remotely, and our monitoring spots many problems before anyone in your office notices them. When a fix needs someone in the building, we come up to you, at no extra charge.

When you call, you speak to someone who knows your systems and your staff. Andrew has been with Alphabyte for 14 years and Jon for seven, so the people looking after you don’t keep changing.

Managed offices

Based in the Orbit Business Centre?

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s Orbit Business Centre at Rhydycar has around 60,000 square feet of flexible office space, and the council has advertised ICT support among what tenants get, alongside printing, free parking and use of the boardroom. The council’s Enterprise Team is based there too.

If you’re a small team in a managed centre, start by checking what the centre’s ICT support covers. It may be enough for the basics, and if it is, we’ll tell you. Where businesses usually need more is in what belongs to them rather than to the building: their Microsoft 365 accounts, the laptops that go home at night, backups of their own data, and the security a customer’s supplier questionnaire asks about.

We can look after all of that alongside the centre’s services, without getting in each other’s way. How we support Microsoft 365.

Industrial estates

New units, new networks

On Merthyr Tydfil Industrial Park at Pentrebach, a new development of nine industrial units and a two-storey office building on Goat Mill Road was listed on the Welsh Government’s commercial property database in August 2026, with space from about 2,800 to 14,100 square feet. The Pentrebach Enterprise Centre nearby offers smaller units of 500 to 2,000 square feet.

Moving into a unit is the best time to get the IT right, because it’s far easier to run cables before the racking, machinery and desks go in. Order the internet connection as early as you can, since a new line isn’t always quick to install. Plan Wi-Fi for the warehouse as well as the office, decide where the network cabinet will live, and make sure the phones move with you.

We quote moves and fit-outs as a project, separately from the monthly fee, so you know the cost up front. Office moves and IT projects.

Heads of the Valleys

More than one site, one way of working

The Welsh Government finished dualling the A465 between Dowlais Top and Hirwaun in 2025, and the 11-mile stretch reopened as a 70mph dual carriageway on 30 May 2025. For Merthyr businesses with staff, sites or customers along the Heads of the Valleys road, moving between locations is now simpler, which makes a second site, or a team that splits its week between places, more practical.

The IT needs to keep up. Staff should be able to sign in at either site, at home or on the road and find the same files, the same printers and the same phone system. We set up Microsoft 365, secure remote access and multi-factor authentication so every location works the same way, and connect the sites over a properly secured network. A second site usually needs:

  • Its own reliable internet connection, linked securely to the main office
  • Wi-Fi and a firewall set up to the same standard as head office
  • Printers and phones that behave the same way at both sites
  • Backups that include anything stored locally, not just the main server

Pricing is per user, with a fixed quote that takes into account how each of your sites is set up.

Tourism and accommodation

Grant rules that affect IT

Merthyr Tydfil Council’s Enterprise Team runs Local Growth Fund grants for local businesses. Its latest Tourism Capital Grant round, which closed to applications on 12 October 2026, could fund up to 80% of eligible capital costs, to a maximum of £50,000 for attractions and £20,000 for accommodation providers, and equipment costing £500 or more that creates a long-term asset counted as eligible spending.

If better guest Wi-Fi, booking desk computers or a more reliable network are part of a future application, three rules from that round are worth knowing. Hire and lease purchases weren’t eligible. Invoices paid by card or cash weren’t accepted, so grant-funded kit had to be paid for by bank transfer. And items between £5,000 and £49,999 needed three written quotes on the same specification. We’ll give you a fixed, itemised quote, and the council decides what qualifies. Its grants and funding page lists what’s open now.

Switching provider

Time for a better IT provider?

Most businesses that come to us already have someone looking after their IT. The usual reasons for moving are slow replies, a new face every time you call, and a contract that seems to exclude whatever has just gone wrong.

All you normally need to do is send one email giving notice. We’ll review your systems free of charge, plan the move and take care of the handover with your old provider. See how switching works. There’s a no-obligation review period built into our agreement, so you can judge us on the work before you’re tied in.

We work mostly with professional firms, engineering firms and growing businesses. If a customer or a tender asks for Cyber Essentials, we can prepare you from £295 + VAT (the IASME assessment fee is separate), with a 100% pass rate so far.

If you’d like an outside view before talking to anyone, AlphaSec, our security brand, offers a free security snapshot. It’s a one-page report drawn from public records only, checking your email spoofing protection, website certificate, website software and domain renewal.

Questions

IT support in Merthyr Tydfil: FAQs

Do you come up to Merthyr, or is it all remote?

Both. Most problems are fixed remotely, which is usually the quickest way. When a job needs someone there, such as network work, new equipment or a fault that can’t be fixed down the line, we send an engineer, and the visit is included in the monthly fee.

We’re in the Orbit Business Centre. Do we need our own IT provider?

Maybe not for everything. Check what the centre’s ICT support covers first. Businesses usually still want someone looking after their own Microsoft 365, laptops, backups and security, and that’s where we fit in. We’re happy to give you an honest view.

Can you set up the IT for a new unit at Pentrebach?

Yes. New premises are quoted as a project, separately from the monthly fee. We plan the connection, cabling, Wi-Fi and phones with you, so they’re sorted before your team moves in.

Which areas around Merthyr Tydfil do you cover?

The whole county borough, including the town centre, Dowlais, Pant, Pentrebach, Troedyrhiw, Aberfan and Treharris, along with Cardiff and the rest of South Wales.
